Meet Me at 10: The Shona Jackson Series, Book 2 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 225 ratings

Would you have the courage to risk your life for what is right?

Shona, Cuban, Elbie, and Chloe. Four lives inextricably linked. Will tragic events part them forever?

It’s 1958 and Shona Jackson is on the run again, forced to flee Mississippi and the town she’d called home. Arriving in Alabama, with hopes of saving up enough money to continue her journey to safety, she convinces Jeffrey Ellis, the wealthy co-owner of a machinery plant, to give her a job. There she strikes up a bond with Cuban.

Cuban is on a similar path to Shona. Relentlessly abused because of the color of his skin, his sole ambition is to earn enough to escape to New York, but Ellis’s brutal business partner, Larry Bruce, and his racist workforce are hell-bent on making Cuban’s life unbearable.

As events unfold, Shona also finds herself in Larry Bruce’s murderous sights.

Their only hope is Elbie, the elderly tool room supervisor, who has been covertly keeping a diary to one day expose all the horrific acts carried out over the last five years by Bruce and his associates.

But when Chloe Bruce, Larry’s beautiful daughter, returns from college and is introduced to the workforce, there are devastating consequences for all those involved.

Will Elbie’s diary end up in the wrong hands?

Will Cuban achieve his dream of making it to New York?

And will Shona’s past finally catch up with her?

Love love love!!!!
I like to think that there are some books that you can tell will be just meh, good, great, fantastic or life-changing just by reading the first page. “Meet Me At Ten” was absolutely fantastic! I was hooked within the first paragraph. I must admit I finished reading this book within the first two weeks of early January. I can probably say that I would have finished it much faster, however, the tasks of an everyday life cut out reading time for me heavily, but when I wasn’t reading I was thinking about what I read and what was to come next. This book was that good! There was a time when I had gone to a writer’s workshop and the instructor had said that if a story can make you feel an assortment of emotions then it was a success. This book took me through an emotional roller coaster, I felt mainly anger but I also felt sadness and empathy. Taking place in the south during the 1950’s, a time where racism was predominant and aggressive this book weighed heavily on the topic, gruesome and unapologetic. To me, it brought me into the midst of today’s time and however much progress we have made as a society, racism still lingers like a stain within the human race. To be honest, reading the book was painful because of this reason. It did, however, bring a sense of gratitude that no matter how much racism still happens today we as a society just keep getting stronger against that type of evil. This story highlights that there is power in numbers. It also dove into the issues with genders. Shonda, the main character as much of a badass as she is still had to constantly prove herself amongst the men and protect herself as a female working in a male-dominated field and from being taken advantage of. With all of the current events with celebrities coming out with the “Me Too” movement and shining a light of sexual harrassment at work, I couldn’t have read this book at a better time. As a woman, I put myself in Shonda’s shoes, as uncomfortable as it may have been and I felt fury because again, this type of treatment still happens today, and it is not subject to just women. It affects all genders and in all types of work and social environments. The book itself to me was well written, the chapters short and condensed to keep the story flowing very nicely. As an aspiring author myself in the midst of writing my first novel, this book inspires me to keep writing as it was the debut novel for the authors as well. It proves that when you are passionate about something and you discipline yourself to keep going the product will reflect your love and be an instant success. I loved this book and highly recommend it! If you are anything like me you will cry, laugh, jump up in enthusiasm, punch a wall and cheer on these characters. I cannot wait for to read more about Shonda and immerse myself in more of her life. I applaud the authors on such a successful breakout novel and can say that I am a proud fan and supporter!

MEET ME AT 10, by Vicky Jones and Claire Hackney, is set in 1958 in a small town in the deep South, a community rife with prejudice and run by some "good ol' boys" who will do anything to accomplish their goals. In this setting, impoverished Shona Jackson, on the run from past tragedy, seeks a job as a mechanic and the freedom to be who she really is; Chloe Bruce, daughter of "the boss," comes from money and education but is equally victimized by the rules and regulations of her family and local society. When the two look into each other's eyes, they both know they have found "home," but building a relationship is fraught with both difficulties and danger. For me personally, this is a rewarding read, filled with angst, complex plot, intriguing central and supporting characters, and heart-stopping intensity as the forces of good and evil come to a climax. For a debut novel, it is an outstanding success, including careful editing and proofreading. Could not put it down!

This book draws opens your eyes to the prejudices of the world. Although I was aware of the prejudices of the old South especially I never would have thought how the prejudices against the Lesbian and Gay community could have been like the prejudices against the African-American community. Prejudice is prejudice and I can't imagine how people felt to hide in fear .....this story is well written and a real eye opener.

I absolutely loved this book. Sure, if you're looking for sweet or funny, it's neither of those things. However, it's jam-packed full of emotion, drama, and loss, all pulled together inside a great story, in which both characters are incredibly loveable and relatable. I cried twice - I won't give away any spoilers.

Racism, sexism and homophobia are very much issues dealt with, in, I thought, a real and impacting kind of way. The violence is believable for the time in which it is set (1958), and although horrific, it sets the scene and draws you into the lives these characters are leading. I think because of the tragic lives, the love that is found by the two main characters is all that more special.

Meet Me At 10 is well written and well-edited. The story flows and is fast-paced. I read the last 2/3rds of this book in one day. I didn't want to put it down.

My only pet peeve, and this is one instilled in me by my own editorial team, is that there is an awful lot of 'head-hopping', where the POV changes mid-scene between various characters. However, I didn't enjoy the book less because of this.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting debut

This debut novel by Vicky Jones is a story about a girl living in a time when being different could be more than just dangerous, it could be fatal. A love of story-telling is clear in every chapter. Themes of blind prejudice, hatred and brutality are woven with love, friendship and loyalty to lead the reader to an exciting and satisfying conclusion.

What a great story. The opening scenes let me as a reader know that this was going to be a book that told the truth about the ugly side of human nature. Shona is running away from Louisiana it is 1958, and the writers of this book have not held back on the language and bigoted views of the time. As Shona arrives in Alabama, there is hope here as she meets a couple who take her in and she makes friends with a man called Cuban. Cuban and Shona begin working together, where they meet Chloe, the boss's daughter. She seems like the only person who can save Cuban and Shona from various situations they find themselves in. There is romance which despite being faced with boundaries, the couple in question are strong enough to cross. There is violence, murder and sadness. I enjoyed the way the authors have twisted the plot, this foreshadowed the ending superbly. Great to read something so different, the characters are diverse and believable, the prose is brave and well written. When you get to the 'Meet Me At 10' bit, you'll be rooting for Shona and Chloe.

4.0 out of 5 stars A story of forbidden love and prejudices.

A very enjoyable and fast moving story, set in an age when things we take for granted today, were completely taboo then.
Quite shocking when you realise the period in which the story is set, is around 60 years ago.
Even though the world has changed so much for the better, the prejudices, and hatred in this story remains today.
