Trouble on Main Street: Sugar Mountain, Book 1 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 1,142 ratings

A cozy mountain town, a sweet romance, and a secret society of sneaky women.

The sleepy hamlet of Sugar Mountain harbors a secret society of women. Don’t misunderstand—the society itself is not secret—it’s the true nature of the group that is hush-hush.

Sugar Mountain is the kind of charming village that tourists adore. If you like small-town charm, quirky shops, and local art, this is the place for you. But when a blood-smeared package shows up at the post office and it appears to be linked to a scheme that threatens Heidi Collinsworth’s historic home, the town takes on a sinister vibe. Heidi would lay odds that slimy Mayor Winslow is involved, but even with the enquiring skills of The Sugar Mountain Ladies Historical Society at work, proof is scarce.

With conflicting theories abound and tensions running high, it’s up to the ladies of the society to don disguises and go undercover. If they’re not careful, the town may fall to a wrecking ball, Heidi may fall for Adam, the new guy in town, and the secret society will be exposed.

The beginning of a great new cozy series!
Sugar Mountain series by Kirsten FullmerTrouble on Main Street, Mar 2020, 300 pagesWhere There’s Smoke, Apr 2020, 244 pagesShadows in the Salon, Jul 2020, 282 pagesProblems at the Pub, Nov 2020, 270 pagesKU, Cozy Romance Mysteries, 4-4.5 StarsThe covers are done in a charming artwork style that seems to go along with the feel of the stories and the characters in them. You get the sense of a cozy, small town with people who all know each other and work together to take care of their town.“A cozy mountain town, a sweet romance, and a secret society of sneaky women…The sleepy hamlet of Sugar Mountain harbors a secret society of women. Don’t misunderstand—the society itself is not secret—it’s the true nature of the group that is hush-hush.” That’s the way the synopsis starts out for the first book. And once you actually get into the books and start reading the prologues, it gets even worse. But first, a bit about each book.Slightly Revealing*Trouble on Main Street is Heidi’s story. Heidi is the postmaster and lives in an old historical house right on Main Street with her 14 year-old son, Tyler. She’s also the current head of the Sugar Mountain Ladies Historical Society. When she sorts the mail that morning she’s disconcerted by a long tube package with bloody handprints on it which appears to have already been delivered to the Mayor’s office and been sent back. Then, Nancy, the town gossip, comes in with news that they are going to be demolishing the old houses on Main Street (where Heidi lives) to make way for a mall. While she’s there, a new resident comes in to get his mail. Nancy does her best to get information out of good looking Adam without any real success. He succeeds in ruffling Heidi’s feathers, too, with his lack of forthcomingness. Being the postmaster, she might actually need some of that information Nancy is digging for and he is so cagily keeping to himself. Then she remembers she already has it. Later, at the meeting of the Ladies Historical Society, she’s not her usual calm and collected self with all this on her mind, but she manages to send her ladies out on missions to gather information.

Author Kirsten Fullmer has worked in the field of engineering, has been a teacher at the college level, was a freelance consultant, and has an affinity for art. Now retired, she has published eight novels including her six part HOMETOWN SERIES, LOVE ON THE LINE, and now TROUBLE ON MAIN STREET.

An ongoing theme in Kirsten’s romance novels is the presence of strong female characters and how they cope with love, life and relationships. Stepping away from her previous Hometown Girl locale of Smithville, this story takes place in a very ‘special’ town – Sugar Mountain, North Carolina – and the unique aspect of this setting is introduced in the Prologue _ “The little town of Sugar Mountain, North Carolina rests in the high country of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Thanks to the beautiful scenery, secluded location, and four changing seasons, the area is a cherished tourist destination. Historians note that the first European settlers came to the area in 1775…What historians don’t know is that the sleepy hamlet of Sugar Mountain harbors a secret society of women. Don’t misunderstand – the society itself is not secret – it’s the true nature of the groups that is hush-hush.’ Mystery, and the reader’s curiosity established, the story presses forward.

Kirsten’s summary outlines the plot: ‘Sugar Mountain is the kind of charming village that tourists adore. If you like small-town charm, quirky shops, and local art, this is the place for you. But when a blood smeared package shows up at the post office and it appears to be linked to a scheme that threatens post master, Heidi Collinsworth’s historic home, the Sugar Mountain Ladies Historical Society take matters into their own hands. Heidi would lay odds that slimy Mayor Winslow is involved, but even with the enquiring skills of the society at work, proof is scarce. The new guy in town, Adam Williams, is determined not to get involved in Sugar Mountain’s business. His last job in a big city planning office ruined his life, but Heidi needs his help. No matter how hard he tries to stay detached, Adam finds himself eyeball deep in Heidi’s problems, as well as the needs of her teenage son and a homeless dog. With conflicting theories abounding and tensions running high, it’s up to the ladies of the society to don disguises and go undercover. If they’re not careful, the town is in danger of falling to a wrecking ball, Heidi falling for Adam, and the secret society being exposed. ’

A cozy mystery, a small town romance, and in Kirsten Fullmer’s hands this novel comes alive with vigor - a refreshing and satisfying experience. Recommended on many levels. Grady Harp, March 20

I enjoyed reading this book even when I didn't understand exactly why characters were acting in a messed up way. So many characters with so little of a plot. I am still confused by some of the actions done by the characters. I think I will try to avoid anymore books in this series. This left me with a head hurt.

TROUBLE ON MAIN STREET was an easy read once I memorized all the society members names and their occupations. That just helped my mental image of what I thought they should look like and their characteristics.

It’s a cozy fun read but sort of unrealistic unless I’ve led such a sheltered life and they really do have secret societies where the leader inherits the meeting home and all the members can go incognito within the small town to spy on people. Ha. The mayor is up to no good and the women aren’t having any of it.

I found just a few errors in the first few chapters.

Is pretty hysterical. Between capers they make their small mountain town a better place. I liked the variety of characters and their very different approach to solving their mystery. This book is a light, fun read.

There was nothing normal about this mystery. The heroine didn't own a cafe or a bakery and didn't own a book store, ... And she didn't have a young daughter. Instead she's a post master with a teenage son. Even better, she's the master of a secret society of competent women dedicated to improving their town. The way that group goes about gathering information left me weak from laughter. The rabid raccoon caper was sooooo funny. This is a great summer read.

Ms. Fullmer sure wrote this book in such a way that it kept the reader wondering why things were being handled the way they were. But, what was actually happening? Why were things being done? And, who was involved? How were the plans going to be accomplished? There’s a secret society of women, who seemed on occasion to a a group of babbling women! Add to all this a very attractive man & you have a fun, entertaining, easy to read book!

Hoping for a decent read but it's MUCH too much of a saccharin romance. Great if you enjoy that sort of thing, I do not.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor writing and cop-out ending drain an intriguing concept.

Cardboard cutout characters acting randomly with seemingly no reason. Annoying so-called romance with more random flipping from keen to distant and back again at the drop of a hat.
And the ending... it felt like the writer realised the deadline was looming so just stopped writing, showed someone getting arrested and threw in a couple of paragraphs of "they solved it earlier today and worked out it must have been X" rather than showing the reader the process. A total cop-out ending that eliminated any chance of rescuing the book from the annoying writing with some kind of clever solution to the mystery.
