Heroing is a tough gig...

When 17-year-old Daniel Nickers gains superhuman abilities, he believes his dream of becoming a superhero will finally come true.

But life isn't like the comic books and the job's harder than he expected. He's constantly in mortal danger as crime in his city soars. He can't control his powers, and he's faced with criminals who act instead of giving speeches about their plans.

If that weren't enough, a new supervillain named Crusher is gathering all the city's criminals together into one organization. Their first order of business is to eliminate the pesky superhero who is the city's only protector.

Daniel must learn to use his powers to stop Crusher before the villain can implement his mysterious master plan, or all that Daniel cares about could be lost - including his own life.

I love superheros. I have followed supers all of my life, and this book is the real thing. It is the story of a young guy who manifests powers and tries to be the hero he believes in. I enjoyed this book so much that I immediately bought the second and third books in the series. It wasn't a perfect book, but it was a book very worth reading. I recommend it to all who love superheros.

As a refreshing breath of air, this teen super hero story was not long-winded or repetitive in its description of the main characters coming to grips with their powers. Nor were we subjected to the pervasive complaint/whining tone of self absorbed insecure character development, many authors immediately go to, to show the struggle to cope with their new-found powers. Unfortunately that tactic has us the readers having to deal with a story plot with actual potential that falls short....heck is decimated due to the authors failure to recognize repeating the same insecurity issues over and over is unfortunately not character growth. Mr. Padilla moves this story along nicely. There is much potential in this story plot and I do look forward to the next installment.

A really good clueless boy meets girl tale. The buildup is excellent and the hero while super is not a god either. A very human tale of good guy meets good girl.

This was an interesting story of a young man who suddenly develops powers in a world where superheroes exist, but are relatively rare. It is combined with an interesting coming-of-age twist and a mystery that is just thick enough to carry the plot to its conclusion.

There wasn't anything really new here. The basic tale is one that has been examined before and the characters here are entertaining, but not revolutionary. Still the story is a very fun to read and engaging way to while away a couple of hours.

    Well done Eric

Unfurled is a page turner! Mr. Padilla's excellent writing style puts me right in the middle of the action. I love the humor in the story too. This is a fun read. Looking forward to the next book in this series!

I enjoy superhero stories and have read a number of them. One thing I really like about "Unfurled" is it's more realistic than some. Yes, the main character develops super powers but he's a skinny teenager who can't always control those powers and he can be hurt far easier than say Superman can. Even as a hero he has to continue living his normal teenage life and struggles to balance being a teenager & a hero. It's a fun story & I look forward to the next book in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quintessential superhero origin story
Reviewed in Australia on March 19, 2017
This is a pretty good book and if you are into superhero novels is definitely worth a read.

There are no major flaws that annoyed me while reading this. The author doesn't switch point of views or perspectives badly, he doesn't make a crap sack world but neither is everything flowers and sunshine. The hero's enemies nicely match him and his allies compliment him nicely.

For the author, the twist with the girl came out of left field and could have used some foreshadowing, and the issues with the police and government could have had more attention in how they affected the protagonist. Minor flaws really

Overall this is a good book written by an author within his skill level. Htey didn't try any twists or format screws, they didn't swap main characters halfway through and otherwise avoided common pitfalls. On the other hand it's almost cookie cutter and doesn't push any boundaries.

    Four stars
