- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2014I found Dr Goad's personal experiences were easy to relate to. This easy read will help anyone out. No matter if they interact with people at work, at home or at school. This book reminded me that we all have faults and strengths and we generally have very similar goals. I personally used this book to prepare for a promotional exam. It helped me narrow the goals I would have for my team. A couple points that stuck with me were: relationships matter and the smallest gesture can make a lifetime of difference. There are so many short but powerful messages in the book that I consider it a must read. You won't be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2015I’ve had to personally deal with politics at work, and not just “office politics” but the friction that opposing political views can cause in the workplace (in particular around election time).
Politics can be fatiguing – especially when leadership within an organization places undue focus in this area.
Purple puts an end to the red/blue divide on leadership and offer a perspective that does more than just “reaching across the aisle.”
This work takes a look at what is in common, and provides sage advice illustrated through the author’s own experiences. Of all the compelling stories in this book, the “shoeshine moment” stood out to me as a prime example of how great personal experiences and stories can effectively teach and communicate valuable lessons.
This book also challenges us to expand our perspective, not to give up a position, but rather value other for who they are with a focus on commonality, not division.
Whether you are a leader of people, an employee with political perspectives, or you just enjoy non-fiction that will entertain while educating and expanding your perspective, I recommend Purple People Leader.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2014I recommend this book for anyone who is tired of the current gridlock in American politics. Chester Goad's purple mission recommends focusing on teamwork instead of differences in party affiliation. His experience in government and education creates stories that are illuminating yet also quick and interesting. He even quotes past American presidents. I'm glad I read this book before the next presidential election. I think our country is clamoring for us to set aside our differences and become a politically color-blind team and here are specifics for how we can become 'purple' people leaders for a functional country. This book also offers ideas for motivating democrats and republicans to work side by side on projects in our communities - a simple but revolutionary concept.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2017Every leader should read this well written book. It will help you breakthrough politics and lead effectively. I personally enjoyed how the author shared his personal experiences with the reader and the easy to apply advice. Being a leader in the County job position I walked away with insightful and new ways to lead the people around me.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2014This book is so refreshing in today's environment of divisive politics. The inability to discuss issues in a civil manner has torn apart families, businesses and churches at an alarming pace recently. This book gave me clear action steps I can take to lead through the minefield of today's environment. Easy read and great stories to illustrate how to lead purple.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2020This book is TERRIBLE. Despite the subtitle - there was no inspiration or wisdom gained - and the few “tips” were not new/original. The author is a pseudo-intellectual raconteur who spends more time talking about himself than offering salient advice or ideas. Worse, the author uses large type on a single page to quote HIMSELF!!
Here’s the ultimate lesson of the book - listen respectfully and don’t discount people based on their political ideology. There - I just saved you $12.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2014Such a timely work! This country has many dividing lines: political, socio-economic, generational, gender, race, religion, regional, and the list can go on. Differences between people are not bad, in fact, variety is critical for growth, understanding, and maximizing our potential.
But can also create unnecessary barriers. Chester Goad's book helps break down those walls by helping us realize that our differences are what make us stronger. The cover and title refer to US political parties, but the lessons for creating a "purple way of thinking" can be applied in any situation where opposing beliefs dominate. This is not a "red is wrong, blue is wrong, purple is the only correct belief" approach. Learning to think purple let's you maintain your core beliefs while learning to work with different ideas constructively and collaboratively.
The goal is not to create a mono-culture. Homogenization is only good in milk. This country needs to be able to have multiple opinions. But it also needs to develop a more accepting tolerance of those different opinions so that we reach the goal together.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2014Great book! I recommend for anyone that plans to on take a leadership role as well as current leaders. This book offers a refreshing prospective and cuts straight to the point. Would be a wonderful gift for teachers as well.
