The Salt Marsh King Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

A modern reimagining of Shakespeare’s King Lear by debut literary novelist Drew Krepp.

Henry O’Reilly, the founder and head of a seafood empire nearing the end of his career, makes sudden preparations to divide his empire among his three sons and entrust to them not only the family business, but the future of their North Carolina town.

The youngest of the three, Patrick, remains at odds with his family’s decadence and avarice, and declines to become involved. As the two older men conspire to force Henry into early retirement and take over the company completely, the brothers’ lust for power leads to turbulent and terrifying battles, with Patrick unwillingly thrust into the very eye of the storm.

As greed, cowardice, and petty spite threaten to destroy those around him, Patrick proves himself no match for the scheming of others. If he is to survive the maelstrom wrought by his bickering, dangerous kin, he must find his strength within.

Caught between the spiraling pulls of business intrigue and the deadly force of a hurricane sweeping up the Carolinas, the events of The Salt Marsh King will alter the shape of a barrier island, the destiny of a powerful family, and the fate of the town that relies on their business.

Fast on the heels of his 2013 award-winning short story "The Brackish", Drew Krepp’s debut novel The Salt Marsh King heralds the full arrival of a talented author whose voice is fresh, intelligent, and powerful.

Excellent story telling that captures the dynamics and legacy of a father and his three sons. The words paint realistic portraits of very human characters. They also create a sensuous atmosphere and vivid setting with images of the land, sea and storms. You can smell the salt air as you read.

Great read, keeps you engaged and brilliantly engages the imagination of the reader. I saw parallels between the characters in the book and the author's real life experiences, by the way he is my cousin-in-law. Well done Drew, when is the next one coming out?

The Salt March King portrays a modern family in turmoil. It beautifully captures the coastal setting of much of the story and builds, like the hurricanes it describes, to a stormy conclusion.

Today designer jeans are fabricated to show tears and dirt of workmen. This book shows the value of craftsmanship. The main character, Patrick, finds solace in constructing docks. He must escape the family drama that occurs to build a business empire. Patricks has two older brothers. They choose unwisely extremes to cope with their father's success as the CEO of a seafood company. Patrick reluctantly patches the family back together with the help of his father's confidante. One of the best parts of the book comes at the bar when the patrons lament the tear down of cottages by the sea. Anyone who feels the pull of the salt air will enjoy this book that explores the destinies of seaside towns.

This is a must read for anyone who has ever set foot in the ocean or any nautical setting and Drew Krepp is the next Ernest Hemingway. Plain and simple. I was enamored with the vivid imagery and sense of place and couldn't put the book down. The King Lear motif is also an important element. I look forward to watching this literary star rise!
