Second in the M J Williams series of "On the Road..." mysteries, "...Where the Bells Toll" continues to develop the lead characters, Emily and Stan, a pair of intelligent and likable retirees who have a knack for stumbling across dead bodies and then using their skills as a former police officer (Emily) and history professor (Stan) to solve the crime. The introduction of family adds more depth to our leads -- they and their grandchildren especially are fully realized characters with just the sort of quirks that make real families interesting (and sometimes frustrating). The authors capture the setting in Boston beautifully, giving insight into the history of the Old North Church and its legends as well as to H W Longfellow. Most of all, this is a fun read! The plot is well crafted with a number of surprises, including the final reveal of the villain. Hopefully it won't be too long for #3 to come out.

Camping season has begun, and anyone looking for a fun vacation read will enjoy the On The Road mystery series by the writing duo, M.J. Williams. The series features retired police officer Emily and her historian husband Stan, living the good life through RV travels. Well, at least they’re trying to live the good life, but murder and other intrigue seems to follow them where they roam: first to Door County, Wisconsin, then to Boston. The clever banter and wonderful descriptions make these mysteries a welcome escape for readers!

An engaging mystery that I couldn't wait to get to each night. The characters are a delight and the setting just as I recall from our family trips to Boston. And it's utterly credible from first to last. Highly recommended.
