Manrattan Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 48 ratings

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the sewers…

New York city is on the brink of destruction. First, millions of rats crazed from consuming an enhanced poison, Degenesis, devoured citizens too slow to escape their frenzy, and chased off the rest. Next came the pandemic, shutting the metropolis down just as it started to recover.

Man always has a plan. But nature, and science gone awry, are one step ahead.

Husband and wife exterminators, Chris and Benita Jackson, thought their nightmare was over. The scars of their narrow escape run deep, and fear is their constant companion.

The rats are back. Only this time, there are no hordes of hairy, whip-tailed vermin barreling down the streets. The next generation is bigger, stronger, more unstoppable than ever. And they are about to go up top!

Tapped by the military to help control the rising tide of death and destruction, Chris and Benita end up fleeing for their lives in the city that never sleep’s deadliest night. From Times Square to the Statue of Liberty, no one is safe from the feral evil determined to conquer the big, rotten apple.

New York, New York. It’s a hell of a town.

Manrattan was another outstanding creature feature icky bug from one of my favorite horror writers. The story was funny, violent, and full of mayhem. My only issue was that it was written in first-person. At least it was past-tense, but I’m not a fan of the myopic first-person viewpoint. Then again, it takes a lot to get me to read this style and because I like Hunter Shea’s writing so much, I gave it a chance. I’m glad I did.

The story was short, sweet, and a lot of fun. Highly recommended.

Hunter Shea is back! The king of cryptids and monsters is back with his sequel to Rattus New Yorkus.

This time, the rats are back. This time they are bigger than ever and pissed off.

The fight is on to save New York City from giant, man- eating rats.

Manrattan is a very fun read, it is Hunter Shea at his best.

Several years ago, Hunter Shea, one of my favorite creature/cryptid authors, released a Must Read titled Rattus New Yorkus. As you may know, I love me some creature/eco-horror, and I also, as a Native New Yorker, love when NYC is under siege by vermin, creepy crawlies, supernatural terror, or whatever. If the Big Apple is doomed, I'm reading it. So when I saw that Shea was releasing a sequel, it automatically jumped to the top of my TBR pile.
Manrattan picks up several years after the events in Rattus New Yorkus. The rats have been defeated, but for Chris and Benny Jackson, the thrill of living in New York died, and when it came time for the residents of the city to return, the Jackson had opted to relocate to Westchester -- and rats were something they no longer handled as part of their pest control/extermination company.
When a close friend who is also in the pest extermination business calls and asks for their help, both Chris and Benny say no, 1. because it's NYC, and 2. they no longer deal with rats. But their former associate is adamant that they come. It's not a rat, he swears, but an escaped capybara, that's how big it is. So, against their better judgment, they venture into the city to lend a hand. Only, it's not a capybara.
    It's a rat.
The size of a small German Shepherd.
As soon as the situation is handled, they hightail it back to Westchester, only to be summoned back to New York by the military as consultants on this new menace threatening New York. It seems the fool-proof rodenticide that turned rats into horny incubators for multiple rat litters that eventually overran NY has had some unforeseeable long-term side effects. The rats are no longer hyperbreeding machines; they've just grown to mammoth proportions, and there's a helluva lot more than at first thought. Now, Chris and Benny's in-and-out consultation has turned into a life-threatening escape from New York.
I've yet to read a Hunter Shea novel that failed to deliver the thrills and chills, and Manrattan is no exception. The tension runs high and is broken up by the humorous back-and-forth dialogue between our two favorite exterminators. Each encounter with the Ratzillas is more over-the-top than the previous one, so there are quite a few eye-roll moments that are very much intentional, and you find yourself looking forward to their next run-in to see how the author is going to top the last one. The only problem I had with Manrattan was the ending, which just didn't work for me. It leaves things open to a sequel, which I don't mind, but it's one of those open-ended cliffhangers that I hate. And while most of the cliffhangers I've read seem to be plotted into the story, this one seems unintentional, like the author didn't know where else to take it, so rather than fumble for an ending, he just decided to end it, and in doing so, leaves the reader hanging, frustrated in that we have to wait until the sequel (if there is a sequel in the works) is released to find out what happens.
If cliffhanger endings don't bother you, this is definitely one to check out. But make sure you read Rattus New Yorkus first.

Benny and Chris thought the big rats were gone. They no longer live in New York. But they get a call asking for help. The rats are bigger and meaner. They have been eating on special stuff. Can they save themselves?

This was a ridiculous joy— just the right mix of lighthearted writing, character development, satire, Godzilla, COVID humor and inside jokes about NYC

    Another fun twisted read.

This was not a typical Hunter Shea book. It had its good points and bad points. I don't recommend it and I do recommend it. It will be up to the reader who is looking at possibly buying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Die Menschenfänger von New York
Reviewed in Germany on August 26, 2024
Schon einmal hätten sie New York beinahe vernichtet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invasion of the Mega Rats
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 26, 2023
When Hunter Shea pens a creature feature you know you're in for a good time. Manrattan is no exception. This time, the foe consists of gigantic rats (and I don't mean Trump) who have feasted on Covid-infected... well, I'll let you discover what for yourself) and have essentially grown out of all proportion. They say you're no more than six feet away from a normal-sized rat. Imagine rats the size of rhinos and you get the picture. This is an invasion and these killers are insatiable. Husband and wife infestation team, Chris and Benny Jackson, need to use all their resources and wits to outsmart these rodents and as always, the clock is ticking. These creatures reproduce fast.

I loved the pace, the humour, the characters and the story. All the ingredients are mixed together and I thoroughly enjoyed the thrill-ride. Hunter Shea is such a versatile writer and keeps you turning the pages. A new release from him is always the right choice.
