The Barber's Wife Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

3.9 out of 5 stars 85 ratings

Mayme Holloway knows how to keep secrets. Wounded outlaws often call on her medical skills and trust her silence. When Charley Floyd and his wife pay their old friends, Mayme and O.C., a visit, everything changes.

Charley, aka Pretty Boy Floyd, is wanted for killing a lawman. His wounds require more help than Mayme can provide, which forces her to break her silence and seek help from Dr. Joe Stern. While O.C. safely cuts hair at his barbershop, whistling hymns and telling jokes, Mayme and Dr. Stern venture out into the Cookson Hills to treat Pretty Boy Floyd. Over time, Joe and Mayme forge a strong bond as they care for other wounded men. They share dangerous secrets, dangerous lives, dangerous patients, and a dangerous love.

Tanya Nichols is a true storyteller! I had the privilege of listening to The Barber's Wife on my daily commute to work. Often I would find myself taking the long route so I continue to hear her words. The characters were well developed and I felt myself rooting for Mayme and constantly wondering what is going to happen next. It was easy to visualize the story which makes me think this could make for a fabulous screenplay as well.

nThe title led me to expect something different. I think I expected the barber to star and I did not expect another, a man wanted for murder and bank robberies as a pivotal character. I must have missed the reviews. / The interactions are good. A passive aggressive mother in law. She did not have much to say much. She, like others, cast shadows. i guess that is what I liked about the book, the influence or meaning of a character casting a shadow when they are else where. / I loved the doctor. Details about medical instruments and cures, interesting. /The barber's wife though listens to her own drummer and if she is breaking the law, every one around will protect her. The barber was deliberately dull; a personality necessary for one who pops a shawl over shoulders of men with every persuasion of points of view leaving the barber to be always agreeable and himself make small talk. The barber's wife on the other hand makes things happen while healing her fellows. .She is the fixer... Until, someone fixes her...

I liked the book because the story is based in fact. The main character is well developed and the events were interesting. I am wondering about the correct word usage of 'then' - a word about a particular time (instead of 'than' - a word denoting a comparison).

This book captured my interest on page one and held until the end. It is a masterful, moving piece of story-telling that will have you rooting not only for the protagonist, but for every well-developed character in the book, even the "bad guys." A wonderful novel, not to be missed.

OK. Interesting, but not a smashing read.

I was engrossed in this book, from the first page until the last, and could not put it down. The author's descriptive, yet not overly detailed, writing kept my imagination working constantly -- "seeing" in my minds eye all the scenes and situations she recounted. A good read!
