Resurrection: Second Life of Mr. Hunt, Book 1
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
In the 50,000 years since Ryan Hunt was cremated, human history has taken several catastrophic turns. After nuclear annihilation came the volcanoes, and now there’s a plague bearing down on humanity. It’s going to take something big to save them this time.
And they get it, in the form of a resurrected Hunt, who’s been given a second life. His DNA, it turns out, is the key to rescuing the species. But it won’t be as easy as simply swabbing the inside of his mouth.
To survive in this new world, Hunt has to evade the kidnappers who are after him, hop from planet to planet, and even dust off his tux for a date to a ball. Even more challenging, he needs to navigate the waters with adventurous and beautiful scientist Dr. Kat Winslow, whom adventure seems to follow.
With help from a friendly robot named NORA and a newfound sense of daring, Ryan Hunt is ready to take on the future - whatever it brings.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2024This book was all over the place and I was kind of bewildered at the beginning with how the main character was going to exist lol. But vampires and alien demons? I like the inventiveness. I laughed many times so while I think it could be a little better I’ll give a good score for inventiveness and entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2017The Second Life of Mr. Hunt.
I have to start out by saying that I am not a huge sci-fi fan. I always felt that sci-fi was just too far out for me and I couldn't wrap my mind around entire worlds that look nothing like the world I inhabit every day. Well, this book changed my outlook completely. I’m not going to run out and join sci-fi conventions, but I will say my attitude toward sci-fi novels has changed and this book is the reason why.
The first chapter or two set the scene, explaining how the world got to this point and I read along like a good reader, but wasn't really engaged. It’s the backstory to how we got to the current state. Okay, I get why it’s there. However, once chapter three rolled around, I was full-in. Strong character development? Check. Riveting plot? Check. Well-paced storytelling. Triple-check. I was hooked!
I don't want to give away any secrets, but not all is as it seems and you'll have to read the book to figure out who is good, who is bad, and what is really going on. It’s fast-paced and action packed. The best part is that you don’t need a spreadsheet to keep up with the list of characters as in other novels. This is what storytelling is about. An engaging story with just enough in each chapter to pull you through to the next. It's an excellent first novel and I cannot wait to read the next installment to see what happens.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2017Excellent sci-fi story. Enjoyable reading with very interesting characters. Loved the creativity in describing how the earth and the galaxy evolved over thousands of years. Looking forward to the next book and finding out what happens to Ryan and Kat.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2023The mix of religion and science was good. The character development was average and emotional development was cliché. Unfortunately there are just too many "there just happened to be" unstead of emaginative invention. One main character, the AI, was ill used, explained, explored and lacked interaction with the main character that would explain motivation and emotional development in an AI. The love interest is not played with at all leaving the emotional connection contrived. The outline of the story is great. But the story execution is immature lacking fulfillment of literary moments that could have elevated the story greatly greatly. The beginning of the story was well developed too bad the rest of the story was not.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2018Amazing book for a first-time author!
The dialogue was a little scripted at first; but improved as the book progressed.
I am now very angry as the sequel is not written!
Mr Overeem, repeat to yourself: "must write faster."
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2019Overall I thought it was a pretty good sci-fi book. It tells a pretty good story and hits some familiar beats without being too derivative, which is tough when there's so much stuff out there. I agree with some of the other reviews in that the background starts slow but the pace (and page flipping) picks up once you get to the heart of the story. Perhaps some of the background timeline could have been interspersed as flashback chapters throughout to break it up a bit - that being said, if you made it through the opening book of GoT you should be easily able to get through a few chapters here.
I liked the characters, especially some of the supporting ones though at times I felt like there was a bit too much of various mythos being thrown at me at once, with at times bordering on ex machina - but overall the connections are set up well and I'm sure will play out more in future books. I also found at times that the dialogue/interactions didn't quite translate well from what they might actually have done in "real life" versus words on the page but again that's a bit more observation on style versus taking away from the story.
So it might not be as polished as one might be accustomed to if you only read major sci-fi writers but in the end the story is good enough for you to want to get to the end and see where it goes in future volumes.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2018A very interesting blend of sci-fi, fantasy, post-apocalypse space thriller. A man out of time, a looming war with ancient evil, and mysterious artifacts with untold power and potential. I am very much looking forward to the next book.

2.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like it, but ...
The book has an interesting premise that sadly is let down by very poor execution. The writing is riddled with clunky exposition, cringe inducing dialog, tautologies, oxymorons, on top of a mismatched grabbag of tropes and stock characters the author piles on but lacks the ability to connect into a functional whole. There are ideas, enough to give two stars for enthusiasm if not originality, however the author's skills fall well short of actually realizing their narrative potential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read
This was a nice quick easy read, definitely worth my time, bought the others currently in the series and will continue when book no 4 comes out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buck Rogers in the 50 century?
What a mixture of 80s TV sci-fi, christianity and post-apoc fanatsy! Buck, sorry Ryan, arrives by the convergance of good luck, way out there cloning techniques and the intervention of an actual angel, in the year 50,000. This far future sees mankind on a far flung planet with an amazing eclectic mixture of technology - some chairs hover, other have anit-gravity, whole people can be grown from ashes in a vat in a few hours but the body guard and loyal servant to an oligarch has what appears to be a clockwork prosthetic leg! Don't get me started on the AIs!
I nearly gave up with the background/history section of the book, where we are taken in a few giant leaps from current times to the year 50,000. There were momnets of interest that were cruelly stopped for the next leap in history. But on the whole this section (about 30% of the book) is a drudgery to read.
Once we reach the year 50,000 the book settles into a more interesting read. The characters are surprisingly shallow which is a shame. The author starts to fill them out but it just isn't possible to place a human 48,000 years in to the future and have him barely dusturbed by this in less than 10 pages.
One thing in Ryans favour is that although the English language of 1000 years ago is virtually unreconisable to a modern person, the English langauge of 48,000 years in the future is identical without even an accent to overcome. Except the future mankind don't know the word "dude".
The basic story itself is not bad but the 'big reveal' near the end was, like the rest of the book, done too quickly and lacked the depth of story telling that would build anticipation and anxiety in the reader. Shame, as an opportunity was missed.
I am curious enough to want to read the next book, but it is not high on my priority list.
Oh, there were vampires in it briefly as well. No idea why.
