- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2021British author Rik Stone has always loved to read, especially fiction, even while working in the shipyards, the merchant navy and the quarries in South East England. After gaining this amount of life experience he turned to his education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Computing Technology. Now, retired from all of that background, he has realized his dream of being a writer. His first book was BIRTH OF AN ASSASSIN and partly due to the public success of that novel as well as his drive to explore the topic further he has created a series - and that is where we arrived with THE TURKISH CONNECTION, THE MAN IN THE BLUE FEZ, then THE WAY WE WERE Followed by the Destiny Series of which A DESTINY TO DIE FOR II: A GIRL IN A FAVELA... is the second installment. He lives in Essex in the UK.
Rik opens his novel with a telling Prologue. Those who are new to Rik’s genius are introduced to his fluid writing style, a technique of creating atmosphere of place: `Recife, Brazil – ‘My head hangs heavily and my mind wanders in mental confusion, but something inside jots and the pain snaps me back into the present. I’ve been in a comatose state for…I don’t know how long, but before my mind drifted into oblivion I was thinking over my life, trying to rationalize how things would have come to this. I’ve searched longingly for some kind of redeeming qualities in my existence; so far, I’ve drawn a blank. There might yet be a chance I’ll come across something, but I’m not holding my breath, Where was I with my recollections anyway? Oh, how could I forget? Nilsson, My deliberations had taken me as far as Nilsson.’
In what we new realize is Rik’s inimitable style, he provides a terse synopsis of the plot: ‘After a showdown with the local cartel, Angelita begins to understand there is more to life than money. But is it too late...? An unstoppable hitman has been ordered to kill her.’ Few guiding words, but enough to magnetize the reader – again!
Continuing the tale that has all the flavor of Brazil’s favelas and the cast of characters that become lifelike as though preparing for a cinematic version of the story – something very much worth considering – Rik Stone again produces an intense novel, very strongly written, one that commits the reader to the concept of a continuing series very well indeed. Rik Stone is now established as one very fine sculptor of thriller novels. Grady Harp, July 21
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2019Destiny to Die for is a thriller revolving around the world of drugs and cartels. It is fast-paced and entertaining enough.
The beginning felt a bit trite; the main character waking up from a coma, recalling everything that happened to her. Then I realized the book is a sequel, so this part was probably to introduce her story. The other thing that made the book felt unrealistic was the language and use of sentences between these supposed thugs, killers, and bad guys. They felt too “literate,” polite and educated; I guess I was expecting a more realistic, raw approach.
Aside from that, the book is engaging, suspenseful, and easy to read. I would recommend it to someone looking for an uncomplicated read. I felt Angelita is a well-developed character, a bit predictable on some parts, but entertaining for most of the story. I’m curious to read part #1 to see what led her to this new crossroad.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2019A Destiny to Die For - II is a well-developed story that moves at a good pace and doesn't possess any dull moments. It is packed with a lot of action, some mystery and can be labelled a thriller. Angelita, our protagonist, is a strong woman full of grit and gumption, who does not shy away from a fight and is willing to do anything for those she loves. When her family becomes the target of a disgruntled enemy, she goes all out, guns blazing and stops at nothing to ensure their safety. The book will take you into the world of drug cartels and how they operate, where loyalties lie and what happens to those who betray it. An interesting, fast-paced book that delivers exactly what it came for.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2019Unpredictable reading for me. I really liked the plot of the book. I was impressed by the dark shade that fascinates. I do not often read such books and for me it was the first experience, but I want to say that I was not embarrassed by the presence of unusual vocabulary or the presence of drugs, criminal. I think that the author just wanted to show us the life of the main character Angelita such as it is without unnecessary colors. Some of her phrases even made me wonder and sympathize. In general, the author makes the reader start to trust the story and the heroine. I think this is really a talent. An unusual book with exclusive content, I enjoyed and will definitely advise friends and advise you! A Destiny to Die For is the book that can break your stereotypes of reading. I spent good time traveling in the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2019A Destiny to Die For (book 2) is entertaining and I like the way that the author creates suspense and maintains a thrilling pace. The plot is interesting and the main character, Angelita, is well-developed and easy to invest in. However, some of the writing, including dialogue and circumstances, could have been improved and made more realistic, and supporting characters didn’t feel very developed which took my mind out of the story several times while trying to figure out who they were and what the purpose was. I did like how it ended, without typical neat little bows put on the story. It’s a good concept and not a bad read, but improvements and some rewriting could really make it a great book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2019A Destiny to Die for Book ll is a great ready from the first of Rik Stone's books. A dark and mysterious read involving drugs and the cartel is quite fascinating as you get more into it. This book is mysterious, suspenseful, and will captivate you almost instantly. The characters Stone has developed throughout his stories are leaving people wanting more from him after they finish each book. This book was an easy read, but a good one. Something I would recommend to any adult!
