- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2017Indian author Gita V. Reddy brings to her wonderful children’s books a rich background for data gathering: she has a post graduate in Mathematics, has worked in a bank for twenty-six years, is married to a physics professor, has a son doing research in neuro-electronics! Of the many books she has written this new HOP AND CHOMP shows a maturity of style and a complexity of characters yet she continues to maintain a fine sense of entertainment and lessons for the reader to learn. She describes her genre as ‘mysteries, adventure, fantasy, science fiction, and even animal tales for children.’ Of note, the very fine illustrations are the work of the author!
HOP AND CHOMP relates the tale of a grasshopper name Hop and a caterpillar named Chomp – they are friends but quite different: Hop likes to explore while Chomp likes to simply eat. Hop looks around the grass and flowers and meets other insects, and when he encourages Chomp to join him, Chomp shares he must eat and grow big. Chomp grows, molts his skin and continues to grow, until one day Chomp is not to be found. A friend of Hops explains Chomp is in a pupa – a hard shell – and finally one day Chomp breaks out of his pupa and is a butterfly!
This book is a not only an entertaining book for children, but it also teaches the scientific lesson of metamorphosis and introduces an Indian design custom called Rangoli. Style is yet another of Gita V Reddy’s growing set of attributes. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, August 17
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2018Hop is a cute little caterpillar who love making friends. One day, he comes across an egg hatching on a leaf. The tiny creature informs Hop that he is a grasshopper named Chomp. Chomp cannot stop eating. Hop is mystified but he likes Chomp because he is a good listener. As time passes, Chomp sheds his skin and develops a cocoon. Hop patiently waits as his friend develops into a beautiful butterfly. Children learn about the virtue of patience and appreciation of individual differences in friendships. This is a good book for teachers to employ when teaching about life cycles.
Beginning readers will appreciate the large font of the text, the conversational tone, and the bright, colorful illustrations. Recommended as a beginning chapter book or read aloud, especially for primary grade children.

Hop, a young grasshopper, makes a new friend. He is Chomp, the caterpillar. Chomp is not like Hop at all. While Hop likes to explore the world around him and to play in the grass, Chomp only eats. But Hop doesn’t mind because Chomp is a good listener. He visits him often and tells him all about his day. One day, Chomp stops eating. And then he disappears! Hop and Chomp: A Caterpillar Story is a simple story child will relate to while learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. It is also about friendship, and about accepting differences. Both boys and girls will enjoy the book. The illustrations are hand drawn and will appeal to young readers.
What did I like? I believe that I have read everything that Gita has written or at least close to it. I love reading her books for children and sharing them with my grandchildren. Even my older kids love to read them. Everyone that I have read has always included something to learn about and this one is no exception. Besides the friendship aspect, there is also the butterfly. She has come such a long way from the beginning with her illustrations also. They are beautiful to look at and make the stories come alive.
What are you going to like? Even you are going to enjoy all her books but your children or grandchildren will have a wonderful experience learning about friends and the cycle of the butterfly. They will love the pictures and enjoy the story along with you. The way that is written seems like it is for us but if you listen you will hear the child's voice. Get all her books for your kids and they will be learning every day. I received this from the author for an honest review with no other compensation.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2017We live in the desert outback of Oregon. When you picture Oregon, you probably see green trees and oceans. This is mostly sagebrush and sky. I love it. There is room to breathe and did I mention sky? Many of us don't have grassy lawns, between critters and the amount of water it would take to keep it green, it seems silly to attempt. So instead my family and I have dedicated to saving bees and inviting hummingbirds into our yard. I think because of the heavy snows of the winter we have a lot more vegetation than usual. More butterflies. And just yesterday I saw a Mourning Cloak. I realized I hadn't seen one of those for decades.
And then this little sweet book comes into my life. How adorable the grasshopper and caterpillar are! I love how the author explains why the caterpillar needs to eat so much and about the pupa stage. The pages are colorful with butterfly backgrounds and the Rangoli designs on each page above the main characters. Those are inspiring me to try my hand at drawing them.
This book is great for the early reader but great fun for a read aloud and learning about everything from caterpillars to India and lots of art to play with. All while learning to read. I would have had a ball reading this with my kids back in the day.
