- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2015a Wonderful book to consume before buying a house. a friend of mine used the advice in this book and saved herself thousands of unnecessary dollars during closing; she called them on the phony charges and had them on their knees! She said she is so glad she read the book; the author gives the reader all the tricks slipped on buyers unaware and helps us protect ourselves. If you plan to buy a house, GET THIS BOOK!!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2014Lots of very good information packed in this book but it does not replace a professional to guide you down the path to home ownership. Laws and markets are very different geographically so don't think you can go it alone with such a great book. It covers many of the things I work with new buyers on when they are looking to buy their first home. I will use it as another resource to give my new buyers if they are readers. I tried the audio version too, but the narrator does not do justice to the information in the book. I wish the narrator was more enthusiastic or dynamic with her reading style.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2016I was clueless to what buying a house consisted of prior to reading to reading this book. Now, I'm more confident that I can purchase a home, maintain it, and be on my way to having wealth!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2014I like the practical application of this book. I just started reading it and so far I really like what I'm reading. It defines the terms and process in an easy to understand manner.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2014I would take some advices from here, still looking for a more detailed book, and waiting for the second version.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2014This book has been very helpful for preparing to be a first time home owner. Up to date with the latest information.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2013This is a great book for anyone buying a home for the first time, but I would also recommend it to anyone looking to buy or trade up. It's the next best thing to actually having an expert with you to guide you step by step from the first decision point down to making an offer, finalizing a purchase, and actually moving in.
Ms. Brown offers excellent instructions grounded by her years of experience in real estate. I love her philosophy of home ownership that shines throughout the book and the straight forward money talk. She outlines the financial benefits of home ownership contrasted with renting while making it easy to understand. At the same time information is given regarding responsibilities of ownership so the reader can make a realistic assessment of what is involved and decide if it is a good time to buy.
The book is very encouraging and dispels some stereotypes. It has plenty of current references and links to get the reader connected with professionals in their area. Budgeting considerations, credit scores and financial readiness are all covered in detail with sound practical advice. There is a very thorough review of housing types and what should be considered before buying. Step by step guidelines are given on how to evaluate a list of potential homes and compare it with the buyer's needs or preferences. There is a lot of information packed in this book!
I found it to read much easier than most financial guides and references I have seen. I wish I had read this before I bought my first home. Information is presented in such a clear, logical and organized fashion that anyone should be able to understand and benefit from this book. There is also lot of helpful information in the back of the book including a glossary, a list of acronyms, a complete bibliography, an index and an appendix full of useful forms.
I hope this review helps. I gave it five stars because it is excellent!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2016Wow! I wish I'd had this step by step book when I bought my first home. Ms. Brown breaks down the sometimes overwhelming process of buying your first home to small, manageable bites.
Chapter One is just plain common sense about getting clear on finances and mindset, definitely steps that shouldn't be skipped:
1. Write Down Financial Goals
2. Prepare Your Monthly Budget
3. Upgrade Your Credit Score
4. Eliminate Consumer Debt
5. Save Money
6. Enroll in Home Buying Course
7. Change Your Mindset
Regina Brown has not forgotten any detail in her super detailed recap, even explaining why someone should or should not hire a Realtor▪️®️. She also includes forms in the back of the book which help you get your paperwork organized and ready to meet your chosen lender for the first time.
I plan to recommend this book to all my first time home buyer clients. Well worth the read and re-read for reminders.
