- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2005Yes, I'm 37 years old and decided finally it was time for me to read these books! I kept searching for books to read and this set always comes up. I just finished book 1 (Anne of Green Gables)..Now I'm on 2. Ann of Green Gables is about a VERY talkative little girl who is adopted by what seems to be at first a cold, proper, prudish, mother who wanted a boy and also a country husband of few words. Anne is opposite of both these people. Very outgoing, not shy, not afraid to voice her opinion, and is really really into her own imagination. She is very much a red head. She opens the hearts and minds to these prudish parents who become loving and kind to her. They realize that not only did they save Anne's life, but she in fact, saved thiers. It's a sweet story with lots of funny parts. Anne is constantly getting into these situations that are embarresing. Never you mind, she is so strong willed that she manages to get her own self out of it. I love the fact that she doesn't rely on her parents to get her out of her problems.
Even though she wore even me out with all that talking she does (We all have at least 1 child like this) , you can't help but warm up to her. She is also a drama queen. I guess they even existed in early 1900's right? I enjoyed the story very much and am now on the second book which after only 6 chapters has me really excited. So far the second books is very funny.
I would recommend this book to readers typically at least 10 years old and up.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2017The fact that this book is still being read and made into movies/tv shows (netflix soon too!) speaks to L.M Montgomery's wonderful ability to turn the story of Anne's life into a heartfelt story that makes the reader laugh, cry, and everything in between. Montgomery's writing easily captures the reader's attention and makes you fall in love with every one of the characters as if you knew them personally. On top of all that Anne's story seems way ahead of it's time, since Anne is a very independent, working woman who can always bring light to the darkest of times.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2022Slowly, but surely, I've been picking up the Anne series and revisiting them in audio format. I've enjoyed seeing them stand the test of time and multiple reads. Anne's sparkling, imaginative personality, the lovely nostalgic historical settings, heartwarming story and cast of surrounding characters makes them superb reading and listening.
Anne of the Island is the third of the Anne of Green Gables books and carries on the story laid out in the previous two books. Anne is grown up and off to college where the important things she learned are not so much in the classroom. She has a bittersweet friendship with Gilbert now that he's 'ruined' things by declaring himself, she is feeling off center because it seems all her Avonlea friends are finding their life partners and have little time for rambles and old friends, and she, herself has made new deep friendships and finds herself in a dashing romance. But, when the four years are finished, is she still the same irrepressible Anne and has she figured out the difference between fairytales and true love and happiness?
Even as a child reading these, there was a point that I wanted to bop Anne on the head for being so obtuse and stubborn about her own heart and feelings. That did not change. However, I was struck by the fabulous way LM Montgomery laid out this story of a young woman coming of age and making so many quiet, significant discoveries about herself and life. I reveled and was cozy with the gentle life tales and events of Anne's broad connections at Green Gables, in Avonlea, and now further abroad. There is a wealth of incredible storytelling and one can err in thinking it prosy or simplistic when it draws one into the lovely bygone world so deeply.
As to the narration, Alan Munro has a distinct off-beat cadence to his work that distracted me so much. I could appreciate his various voices and changes in tone and pace to reflect the emotion of the scene. So, I adjusted somewhat in the end.
All in all, Anne of the Island brought a major part of Anne's story to a climax and finished out her young adult experience with her looking forward to a promising future. The classic is still golden and I think adults and young alike will appreciate these tales.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2021I am reading all these Anne of Green Gables books at night so that I can have good dreams after all the nightmares going on in our politics and with this virus threatening us by day. Old fashioned but full of humor and fun and good values.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2022I just love Anne Shirley, she is so human, so imperfect and perfect at the same time. I really like the way she has grown up without losing her spirit, her vivid and charming imagination.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2010I know I know I know. It is a total shame that I did not discover Anne until adulthood. I love her now, though. And being with her felt a little like being with Natalie. A book that can take me on a Nattie visit is always a good thing. The upside to reading this as an adult is the help it gave me in parenting. Anne reminded me of being a child myself. She took me back in time and that allowed me to relax more with my boys and remember the fun of a simple summer day and a walk in the woods. I needed to relax in my parenting, and Anne has helped me do so.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2019All the Anne of Green Gables books are good in my opinion but this one I thought was especially amusing and excellent. Anne is off to college and has a string of young men who are vying for her hand in marriage which is frustrating for her and hysterical to read. It reminded me of back in my heyday when I was constantly asked out by men who I had never given any provocation to. Imagine feeling this way but getting asked the big question. The ending of this book is so romantic and perfect.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2020Beautiful is the word that comes to mind when I think of Anne of the Island. It is written with such grace, it's heartwarming. A book in of which Anne finds out what love truly is. Making choices, regretting some, and having to deal with them. In those pages you will find a girl, excuse me, a young women, who is just uncovering what we call "true love."

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorito de la Serie
El arte de la portada es muy bonito y el libro es en mi opinión, el mejor de la serie.

1.0 out of 5 stars This edition is rubbish!
The only reason I gave this one star instead of NONE is that the system wouldn't let me give a zero. This edition is terrible - the English language appears to have been translated from English into another language, translated to a second then translated back into English! An example of the bad translation is in the first sentence of chapter one: "........staring at throughout the shorn fields dreamily." What proof reader and/or editor checked this out?? And other editions, even worse than this, are available for purchase. Buyers beware - check before you buy!
